The folks at Foxhole Bar call it an "upscale locals' joint." Strange to see the words upscale and joint together in a sentence, but that is exactly what Foxhole Bar is, a slightly classed-up version of the coolest lowbrow bar that happens to be located in South Beach.

This bi-level fun house has it all — throwback '80s videogames, including Galaga and Miss Pac-Man (we dig that chick; she's fast), as well as classic bar staples like pool and darts. There's a high-techno gadget jukebox, comfy banquettes, and a big bar you can approach from all sides (cocktail traffic control is key). Bottle service can be arranged upon request, but there's a strict no-attitude policy. If you show up to drink, you are welcomed; it doesn't matter if you are a toad or a Euro-supermodel. We love that Foxhole is open seven days a week and that the drink lineup suits everyone, offering both creative cocktails and about 30 beers. You'll have to seek out the unmarked entrance, though; it's in an alley between Alton Road and West Avenue. Look for the lamp and consider it an adventurous lesson in game hunting.

Embrace your inner beer snob" at this "very chill" Coral Gables gastropub that supplements its quality tap offerings with "interesting and delicious" American "bar food" (wings and bone marrow coexist on the menu); the intimate, exposed-brick surroundings and "friendly staff" make this, befitting its name, a "favorite local restaurant. - Zagat

Bulla Gastrobar

Bulla Gastrobar

Bulla, a Spanish gastrobar on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, best exemplifies the Coral Gables revival. Owner Carlos Centurión was formerly the proprietor of Por Fin, a white-tablecloth restaurant located in the same space. But formalities tired him.

Bulla, his new spot, furnished with walnut wood floors, hanging light bulbs, and equine-inspired décor, is younger, cooler, and better than before. So at the freestanding marble bar, under the mahogany marquee, it's always time for a drink. Cocktails here are delicious and fussy, infused with citrus marmalades, lemongrass syrups, and homemade passionfruit tonics.

Venture to the dining room, where chalkboards list Spanish dishes and swaddle blond wooden walls, to sample chef Luis Quant's small-plates cuisine. Doused in fried tomato paste, albóndigas -- veal and pork meatballs -- swim in milky stracciatella. Croquetas de jamón, golden bits of pinguid beauty, gleam beneath a thin fig jam glaze.

At Bulla, Quant's cookery borders on ordinary, but it triumphs with the teeniest of novelties.

Flute Bar & Lounge

Flute was created by Frenchman Herve Rousseau. The South Beach location of the New York favorite opened in February of 2003. The inspiration came from this experience operating an underground night club in Paris during his college years and later experience as a champagne specialist in New York for a wine and spirits importer. But the juxtaposition of champagne and Vietnamese spring rolls that forms the heart of Flute's menu derives from the Rousseau family tradition of celebrating holidays with champagne and traditional dishes prepared by Herve's Vietnamese stepmother.

Flute creates an elegant, but laid back atmosphere with its honeycomb of candle-lit alcoves and intimate scale. Pale yellow walls wrap guests in a gentle glow while they lounge on low couches strewn with jewel-tone pillows. Others linger at the bar and watch the DJ at his craft. Arches, three-quarter walls and ceilings of different heights create an Escher-like effect that intrigues the eye. Rich velvet curtains turn the banquets into discreet nooks perfect for relaxed conversation with friends or a little romance. Glass-walled wine cellars display Flute's treasure trove - bottle after bottle of champagne.

Perched above the circular main bar of River Lounge inside the Epic Hotel is a luxurious floating mezzanine decked with curvy banquettes and exotic animal print carpeting and furnishings. Sitting above, one is able to observe the expresso hardwood floors and colorful pop-art that decorate the area below.

The entire lounge sits surrounded by fishbowl-like 30 ft. windows and faces out over the Miami River, beneath the rising towers of Downtown and Brickell. Dangling lights from the lounge’s sky-high ceiling hang like frozen ice crystals over the main bar area.
